How do I know if my leg is broken?
I just fell in rock solid ice. I don’t have insurance so I was hoping to avoid the ER if it’s only a deep bruise. I can walk, but as I come down from the adrenaline it gets worse. I can’t even sit Ice on it for the surface pain and swelling.
There is absolutely no way to know without an X-ray. I speak from experience. I was in a car accident about 8 years ago. I got out of the car and my leg and ankle hurt incredibly, but I had no insurance. I borrowed an inflatable cast and crutches from a friend, and took Advil every four hours, and used ice. Everything eventually healed after 3 or 4 months. Last Fall, I had my leg and ankle x-rayed because they ache, and guess what? They had both been previously broken. They think the leg was a hairline fracture, but I got the ankle good. They are now talking about surgery to fix it. My advice, go to the ER. They have to see you, insurance or not. X-rays aren’t that expensive, and it is very likely they will let you make payments. As for your leg, you want it to heal properly if it is broken, and it will need to be set. Even if it isn’t broken, you could have still done some serious damage, much worse than a deep bruise. Get the help you need instead of guessing. They can also probably give you something for pain so that you won’t suffer day and night. I barely slept after my accident. At the very least just go so you won’t be worrying about it all the time. BTW, it is a myth that you can’t walk on it if it is broken. It all depends on the place and type of break. I walked on mine.
