Too cold to ride a bike for exercise. Do I put a jacket on?
I just bought a bike and want to ride it in the morning for plain exercise. No races or anything like that. But its cold and windy outside in the morning, my hands freeze (wearing gloves) as soon as Im out. Its not unbearable but its uncomfortable.
Is it unhealthy to ride on such cold wind? I feel the air is a little bit too cold to breathe(again, only uncomfortable), specially when going fast.
Anyone has any tips about this? Should I put on two pairs of gloves and a jacket? I’ve never seen anyone riding like that. I feel like after warming up I would just get too hot. But then again, is it good for the body to go through this kind of temperature difference? like you’re warm during the workout but its very windy outside and cold air is going through your lungs??

My (UK) winter gloves are Altura Night Vision with “40 gram Thinsulate”. Combined with thin polyester liners, my hands stay toastie warm.
My preference for remaining clothing is several thin layers. At the start of your ride you will feel the cold, but once you’ve been going for 10-20 mins you’ll want to vent or remove a layer.
My mid-layers are probably fair-weather outer layers, so are wind-resistant, which you do need on cold days. They are an ancient Rohan Movi (fine poly-cotton) and a Parrot Pertex shell – both (sadly) no longer available. That way I can take my jacket off once I’ve warmed up.
The traditional advice is to remove layers before you sweat and add them before you shiver. It’s a faff, I know, to break your rhythm, but it’s better for you.
As to breathing cold air, I use a knitted wool/acrylic tube left over from my motor-cycling days, which also covers my ears. I know it works because I was comfy when I got to the office the other (cold) day, and then noticed that my breath had condensed and frozen on the outside of the tube! Again, no idea where I got it, but there’s plenty of similar or better stuff out there.
As to coping with the wind – well, that just means you’ll be pushing a lower gear when it’s against you.
So, have a little (online?) shopping trip, then get out there and ride! Good on you for wanting to ride, rather than moaning it’s too cold.
